How can you meassure the distance of the lightning from the thunder following it?

There is a delay of 5 seconds between the time you see a flash of lightning and hear the thunder.


If you see a flash and count 5 sec.


5 sec= 1mi
10 sec=2 mi
15 sec= 3 mi


And so on...
