...This coming Friday will be the first day of the Hebrew month of Elul.
Elul is the last month of our Jewish calendar and it is also the month welcoming in the new year. How exciting that must be!! Well, as thrilling as the New Year may sound, it is not a month for games.
As I'm sure you know, the Jewish new year is slightly more serious than the classic January New Year. Yes, we are required to be happy for the holiday, but in no way do we light firecrackers and party all night, as some have the very religious custom of doing on their New Year.
Rosh Hashana however, is the time that we are judged on the entire year ahead. It is a time to beg G-d for mercy and kindness, accepting him as the true king over us and pledging our commitment to him, his Torah and Mitzvot.
Now that that's established, the month of Elul takes on a whole new meaning. We cannot just wake up on Rosh Hashana and tell G-d that this coming year we're going to be better people.
To properly utilize Rosh Hashana, one needs to prepare for it. During the month of Elul, it is a time to go over the past year and figure out which aspects of our lives need improvement, which actions of ours this past year should never be repeated and which Mitzvot that we've been weak in in the past, should we strengthen and grow with.
Elul is a time to prepare, so that when Rosh Hashana comes around, we know exactly where it is that we need to go. Everything is clear.
For this reason, it is a very popular custom to blow the Shofar each and every weekday during the month of Elul, reminding us to return to our roots and look upward during the coming up year.
So let's take the time now and the opportunity we have, to calculate and clarify this entire years successes and failures. we should review them and figure out what needs to be done to acheive absolute perfection. Let's also go to Synagogue for Shabbat and let's set up a learning schedule with the Rabbi (Ahem).
Something tickles me to suggest, that when we look at making this world more peaceful, loving and G-dly - Shabbat, learning with the Rabbi and all the other holy stuff seem quite warm and fuzzy.
